CHURCHES OPEN FOR PUBLIC WORSHIP

Regarding the reopening of church buildings for public worship, clergy and churchwardens recognise that it is not mandatory to open immediately and that not all parishioners would feel comfortable about resuming attendance straightaway.

We intend to have one church open at 10.30am each Sunday for a single service for the three parishes. This pattern will run from July 12th until the end of August and then we will review all services.

12th July St Thomas’, Milnthorpe
19th July St John’s, Levens
26th July St Peter’s, Heversham
2nd August St Thomas’, Milnthorpe
9th August St John’s, Levens
16th August St Peter’s, Heversham
23rd August St Thomas’, Milnthorpe
30th August St John’s, Levens

There is no restriction on the numbers for Sunday services, except what is physically possible to maintain social distancing. The figure of 30 max is for weddings and funerals.

We would advise those attending to observe social distancing and hand washing. Not all pews will be available, in order to observe proper distance. Hymn singing is not permitted but we hope to have suitable music played in services.

Holy Communion will be given in one kind (bread) only, as directed by church guidelines.
Refreshments will not be offered following the service, but if parishioners wish to bring their personal coffee in flasks, that would be possible. In favourable weather we could catch up outdoors following the service.

It is hoped to continue a zoom service for those at home, either from the church service or at another time on Sunday morning as technology permits. The order of service will be available as a download each week and we would encourage people attending to bring their own copies.

12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest Religion

Read 'Confronting Christianity' for free

Confronting Christianity explores 12 questions that keep many of us from considering faith in Christ. Look more closely, argues author Rebecca McLaughlin, and the reality of suffering, the complexity of sexuality, the desire for diversity, the success of science, and other seeming roadblocks to faith become signposts. Jesus becomes not a relic from the ancient world, but our modern world’s best hope.

Daily Hope offers music, prayers and reflections as well as full worship services from the Church of England at the end of a telephone line.
The line – which is available 24 hours a day on 0800 804 8044 – has been set up particularly with those unable to join online church services during the period of restrictions in mind.
Options available include materials also available digitally by the Church of England’s Communications team such as Prayer During the Day and Night Prayer updated daily, from Common Worship, and a recording of the Church of England weekly national online service.
A section called Hymn Line offers callers a small selection of hymns, updated daily. An option entitled ‘Hymns We Love’, provides a hymn and reflection.

The Cumbria Ecumenical Spirituality Group
has issued the following prayer.

Loving God, as your Son healed the sick
and brought good news to the needy,
be with us this day.

Loving Jesus as you taught us to
'Do unto others as you would have them do to you',
be with all the medical staff this day.

Loving Spirit, your gift is healing,
Bring your healing fire to our homes, our hospitals and our county,
but most of all, be with us this day. Amen
